The English Shepherd Source (eshepherd.org) conducted a short survey in March 2015.  Media utilized was our e-newsletter, The Shepherd’s Post, as well as Facebook posts with a survey link. The results from our ES Longevity Survey are below.  We hope this data is useful to those in the English Shepherd community.  Feedback is welcomed.  Please use our Contact Us form or discuss in our Forum.  We’d love to hear your thoughts.

[Warning:  While we feel the survey results represent an excellent cross-section of the ES population, take heed when interpreting the results shown below, as they do not include the entire ES Breed.  Surveys were voluntarily submitted by ES owners and supporting documentation was not required.]

 

English Shepherd Longevity Survey Results – March 2015

  • 3 Countries and 40 US States were represented in the English Shepherd Source’s March Survey (see Table 5.)
  • A total of 341 English Shepherds were reported.
  • According to the survey, adult ES owners averaged 2.6 English Shepherds.
  • 237 ES were living as of March 2014. 43% were male and 57% female. Of these dogs, 47 males and 65 females were intact.
  • 104 ES were no longer living. Cause of Death and age at death varied. Results shown below.

 

Mortality Data

A total of 104 ES deaths were reported. The median age at death was 10 years old, while the average age was 9.6 years. Table 1 shows the causes of death for the English Shepherd. Cancer was the overall leading cause of death reported for ES, followed by Old Age and Trauma (mostly from accidents). Table 4 lists the types of cancer reported.

 

Table 2, indicates the 10-12 year age group had the highest reported death rate at 26.92%, second highest was the 13-15 year age group with 25% and third was the 0-3 year age group with 17.31%. The causes of death in descending order for each age group are shown in Table 3.
